ASPIRIN (ASA) & Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) SENSITIVITY

Aspirin and the NSAID’S may cause allergy-type reactions in persons who develop this unusual sensitivity. The main types of reactions are:

1. SKIN CONDITIONS: itching, rashes, hives, or swelling

2. RESPIRATORY: nasal congestion, nasal polyps, sinusitis, loss of smell, cough, asthma, anaphylaxis. A sudden severe asthma attack may happen after ASA or an NSAID.

Stomach pains or upset are not allergic reactions but are usually due to local irritation from aspirin or an NSAID.

1. ASPIRIN or ASA is found in many home remedies or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Please check the list on the back of this page. Look for aspirin or ASA in medications for headaches, colds, coughs, allergies, sinus, arthritis, rheumatism (joint pain), menstrual cramps, backache or urinary pain.

PLEASE READ ALL LABELS CAREFULLY OR ASK THE PHARMACIST BEFORE TRYING ANY MEDICATION. Tell your doctor, dentist, or nurse that you are sensitive to Aspirin.

2. The Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs or NSAID’s may affect patients who are allergic to ASA, and cause similar skin or respiratory reactions. This group of medicines may cause some patients to be sensitive to the sun producing rashes on exposed skin. NSAID’S are used in the treatment of joint pains, muscular pains, headache, abdominal or menstrual cramps and other pains. They are combined with other medicines in cold or sinus remedies. The list of NSAID’s include:

Rx: Anaprox Ansaid Clinoril Daypro Dolobid Celebrex Feldene Indocin Lodine Meclomen Nalfon Naprosyn Orudis Oruvail Ponstel Relafen Tolectin Toradol Vioxx Voltaren

3. Allergy to ACETAMINOPHEN (Tylenol, etc) is very rare but possible. A few people react to BENZOATES- common preservatives.

Always tell any doctor if you are allergic to or suspicious of being allergic to any of these or other medications. CAREFULLY READ THE LABELS ON OTC MEDICINES AND AVOID THOSE WHICH CONTAIN THE CHEMICALS MENTIONED ABOVE.
